Bier Markt – Celebrating Belgium’s Birthday

I am thrilled to be collaborating with The Hip & Urban Girl’s Guide (HUG) once again!  Last week they sent me on a mission to sample beer and food at the Bier Markt, a Belgium-style Brassiere in Toronto (600 King Street West location).  How could I say no??

With over 100 brands of beer from 24 countries to choose from, the Bier Markt knows its beer! From now until July 21st they are celebrating Belgium’s upcoming 181st birthday by offering 3  6 oz samples of Belgian beer ($15) and 3 mini samplings of Belgian-inspired foods ($10).  On July 21st, they are throwing Belgium a birthday bash and allowing guests to get behind a portable bar to learn Belgium Pouring Rituals.  At $4 per pour guests can keep the beer and the glass! How cool is that???

When I popped by the Bier Markt on behalf of HUG, I was able to:

– get behind their bar to learn Belgian Pouring Rituals of Stella Artois Lager, Hoegaarden White Ale and Leffe Blond Abbey Ale (my very first time behind a bar!)

– sampled the above mentioned beers and sample Belgian inspired food (Croque Monsieur, Grilled Prawns and a Braised Short Rib)

– learn about food and beer pairing – I had no idea dessert could be paired with beer and to my surprise, this was my favourite pairing!

– sampled a decadent Flourless Chocolate Cake dessert with 3 different dessert beers

If you think this sounds pretty cool, you can read more about it on The Hip & Urban Girl’s Guide:

I would never have thought to pair beer with dessert but I’m willing to give it a try.
